About the Opportunity
Our client is a reputable law firm in Calgary seeking a seasoned Litigation Legal Assistant to join their busy litigation practice. This is a confidential search for a highly experienced professional who brings deep expertise in civil litigation proceedings and is ready to hit the ground running in a demanding, high-volume environment.
The Role
As a Litigation Legal Assistant, you will provide senior-level support to a team of litigation lawyers across a range of complex matters. Your extensive experience will be relied upon to manage files independently, mentor junior staff, and ensure the practice group operates with precision and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare, format, and proofread litigation documents including pleadings, affidavits, motions, briefs, and correspondence
File documents with the Court of King's Bench of Alberta, Alberta Court of Appeal, and other applicable courts — both in-person and electronically via the E-filing portal
Manage all aspects of litigation files from opening through to trial and closing
Calendar and track critical deadlines, limitation periods, examinations for discovery, and court appearances
Coordinate with clients, opposing counsel, court registries, and process servers
Prepare hearing and trial binders, books of authorities, and document briefs
Assist with examination for discovery preparation, including organizing transcripts and exhibits
Process dockets, accounts, and billing using legal practice management software
Mentor and support junior legal assistants and law clerks as needed
Qualifications
Minimum 10 years of experience as a Litigation Legal Assistant, preferably within a law firm setting in Calgary
Post-secondary education in Legal Administration or a related discipline
Thorough knowledge of Alberta Rules of Court and civil litigation procedures
Demonstrated experience with court filings at the Court of King's Bench of Alberta and familiarity with Alberta's E-filing systems
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with legal practice management software (e.g., Aderant, PCLaw, or similar) is an asset
Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure
Strong written and verbal communication skills
A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently
Discretion and sound judgment when managing sensitive and confidential information
